Why Rider Biomechanics & Functional Riding ?


Because riding better, moving  better and communicating better  creates a happier horse🌞


At Folklore Farm, we believe good riding is about much more than sitting up straight, keeping your heels down, or asking a horse to perform a particular movement.
Good riding begins with understanding how your body works and how your body affects the horse beneath you.


Rider biomechanics explores how the rider’s body moves, balances, stabilizes, and communicates in the saddle. In simple terms, we ask: What is your body doing in the saddle? Why is it doing it? And what is your horse feeling as a result?


Our approach to functional riding helps riders become more balanced, aware, and effective, while also allowing the horse to move as freely and comfortably as possible.


Understanding Rider Biomechanics

Every rider influences a horse simply by sitting in the saddle. Your pelvis, spine, legs, hands, shoulders, weight, and even your breathing are constantly giving your horse information, sometimes intentionally, and sometimes without you realizing it.


When your body is balanced and able to move with the horse, your aids become quieter and clearer. When your body is stiff, crooked, gripping, or out of balance, you unintentionally make the horse’s job more difficult.


A rider may repeatedly be told: “Stop leaning.”
 But… that leads to a more important question: why is the rider leaning?


Perhaps one hip is tighter than the other or the rider is gripping with one leg or the pelvis isn’t moving freely or  the rider is balancing on the reins OR perhaps the rider simply hasn’t yet learned what true centeredness feels like.


Rather than repeatedly correcting the symptom, we aim to understand and address the cause. That is where rider biomechanics becomes such a valuable part of proper riding instruction.


Function Over Position

There is a difference between looking correct and functioning correctly.


Riders often hear familiar instructions: Heels down. Shoulders back. Hands still. Sit deeper. Leg on. These cues can be useful, but the human body does not operate as separate, isolated parts, everything is connected.


If you force your heel downward, what happens to your knee? If you grip with your knee, what happens to your hip? If your hip becomes tight, can your pelvis still follow the horse’s movement? If your pelvis stops following, what happens to your lower back and seat? AND if your seat says “stop” while your leg says “go,” what message does your horse receive?😳


Functional riding looks at the whole rider, rather than correcting one body part at a time. The goal is not to place every rider into the same position, but to help each rider develop a body that can balance, move, stabilize, release, and communicate effectively with the horse.


How Your Horse Feels Your Body

One of the most important principles we teach at Folklore Farm is simple: your riding affects your horse.


A horse carries not only the physical weight of the rider, but also the movement of that weight.


Think about carrying a backpack. A well-fitted backpack with centered weight is easy to manage. Now imagine that same weight shifting side to side with every step. The load hasn’t changed but the effort required to carry it has.


Your horse experiences something very similar.


If the rider collapses to one side, braces against the motion, grips tightly, falls behind the movement, or tips forward, the horse must constantly adjust to that shifting load. Over time, this can influence balance, rhythm, straightness, and freedom of movement ( relaxation ). 


This is why rider biomechanics is not only about improving rider effectiveness  it is also about fairness to the horse.


Supporting Better Equine Movement

At Folklore Farm, we believe horses should be supported in using their bodies in ways that promote balance, comfort, and functional movement. The rider plays a important role in making that possible.


A balanced rider becomes easier to carry. A mobile pelvis can follow the horse’s back more effectively. An independent seat allows the hands and legs to communicate without relying on them for balance. A stable yet supple upper body helps the rider stay centered without becoming rigid. Proper use of weight can communicate direction and balance without excessive rein pressure and clearer, quieter aids make it easier for the horse to understand the request.


The goal is not for the rider to become still. In fact, it is quite the opposite.


Good Riders Move With Purpose

They learn when to move, how much to move, when to stabilize and when to simply get out of the horse’s way.


Recognizing Mixed Signals

Horses are extremely sensitive to changes in weight, pressure, and balance.


Sometimes a horse described as lazy, stiff, crooked, heavy, or difficult is actually responding to conflicting information from the rider.


For example, imagine asking your horse to go forward with your leg while your seat resists the motion and your hand restricts the forward movement. Your leg says: go, while your body says: don’t go. The horse is left trying to interpret which message to follow.


The same conflict can occur when a rider unintentionally loads one side more than the other while asking for straightness, or blocks forward motion with the seat while asking for more energy



As riders develop awareness, these mixed signals begin to fade. The aids become clearer and quieter, and the horse’s responses often become more consistent. Riding starts to feel less like issuing commands and more like a conversation between horse and rider.


Prioritizing Balance Over Force

At Folklore Farm, we encourage riders to rely less on unnecessary muscular effort and more on balance, coordination, and timing.


More force does not create better riding, a stronger leg is not automatically a better leg, a stronger hand is not a better hand and sitting deeper does not mean sitting heavier.


Instead, we help riders organize their bodies so they can achieve more with less effort.

Through rider biomechanics and functional riding, we may work on:

  • Balance and functional alignment
  • Pelvic mobility
  • Core stability
  • Hip mobility
  • An independent seat
  • A quiet, functional lower leg
  • Independent hands
  • Even weight distribution
  • Body awareness
  • Coordination
  • Breathing and relaxation
  • Timing and feel
  • Clear weight, seat, leg and rein aids

These skills develop gradually and are not reserved for advanced riders.
 We believe they should begin with the beginner on the first ride !


Building Foundations for Beginners

You don’t need any prior knowledge of biomechanics to begin at Folklore Farm,  not even familiarity with the term.


A beginner might start with something as simple as: “Can you feel both seat bones?” From there, they may begin to understand how the pelvis influences balance and movement. Over time, they discover how subtle shifts in seat and weight can affect the horse’s direction, rhythm, and overall way of going.


The information grows with the rider’s understanding. That is one of the strengths of teaching through biomechanics:
 The principles can begin in the very first lesson and continue throughout a lifetime of riding.


Refining the Experienced Rider

Experienced riders often come to biomechanics for a different reason: something isn’t working.


Perhaps you consistently lose one stirrup. Perhaps your horse feels different in each direction. One canter lead may be more difficult. You may struggle to sit the trot. Your lower leg may not stay quiet. Your shoulders may twist. Your horse may fall through one shoulder.


Or perhaps you’ve heard the same correction for years: “Sit straighter.” But no one has helped you understand why you aren’t sitting straight.


Instead of focusing only on the visible issue, we look at the rider’s overall movement pattern and ask a deeper question:


What Is the Rider Contributing?


Sometimes, simply changing that question can transform the entire lesson.


Developing the Rider as an Athlete

Riders come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and experience levels, each with their own strengths, limitations, and history. There is no single ideal body type for riding.


Functional riding is about helping your body work as effectively as possible. Rather than forcing riders into a uniform position, we aim for functional alignment.


We develop mobility where movement is needed, stability where support is required, strength where it is useful, and awareness of unnecessary tension so it can be released.


The goal is not perfection.

Understanding the Horse/Rider Partnership

At Folklore Farm, rider biomechanics is inseparable from the biomechanics and proper functional movement of the horse.


We care deeply about how the horse moves beneath the rider. A horse should not have to constantly compensate for imbalance, gripping, bracing, or conflicting aids.


As riders improve their own awareness and balance, they also become more attuned to what is happening underneath them. They begin to feel changes in rhythm, recognize tension, sense when the back is swinging, and notice straightness or crookedness.


They learn the difference between forcing a movement and creating the conditions that allow the movement to happen.


Over time, something important shifts: the rider stops simply doing things to the horse and begins truly communicating with the horse. That is the partnership we aim to develop.


Applying Principles Across Disciplines

Good biomechanics belong to no single discipline. The principles of balance, alignment, mobility, stability, timing, and communication apply whether you ride dressage, hunters, jumpers,Reiner's,  recreationally, or simply want to become a more  horseperson.


Functional riding may appear quiet from the outside, but there is a great deal happening within that stillness. The rider is listening, feeling, adjusting, balancing, following, stabilizing, releasing, and communicating.

As awareness grows, the aids become more refined.


Less force. Less interference. Clearer communication.


Learning From the Inside Out

At Folklore Farm, we don’t want riders to simply memorize instructions. We want them to understand why. Why did that transition improve? Why did the horse soften? Why did the trot become easier to sit? Why did straightness improve when your balance changed? Why did releasing your knee free your pelvis? Why did relaxation increase when you became more balanced?

Understanding creates riders who can think, feel, and problem-solve independently.

Better Balance. Better Movement. Clearer Communication.

And ultimately, a more educated rider — and a horse who can move more comfortably beneath them.
